Artist Talk: Thomas Sayre

Sculptor and painter Thomas Sayre creates artworks inspired by his love and respect for natural materials. Working with tar, smoke, earth, and fire, he creates both paintings and large-scale public artworks. Here in Greensboro, Sayre developed the monumental earth casting Cairn’s Course (2020) for the Downtown Greenway. Cairns are often made of stacked stones and used to mark locations on trails. In Cairn’s Course, Sayre created oversized stones formed from earth cast molds dug from land adjacent to the College Branch Stream. Revealing an array of colors, textures, and natural artifacts, they call attention to the abundant life surrounding the stream. Sayre will join Weatherspoon curator Emily Stamey in a conversation about this project and others.
