This exhibition offers new ways of looking at three-dimensional objects. Whether forms that no longer serve their original intent, eye-catching works that avoid specific contexts, witty re-interpretations of objects, or illusionistic wonders, the artworks included in Ostensibly So reflect a fascination with and exploration of the methods and materials of artmaking as well as the concepts of form and function. As plausible rather than demonstrably true entities, they incorporate additional elements such as humor, symbolism, social commentary, personification, and allusion. Some artists, such as Carol Hepper and Howard Gross, have investigated the expressive potential of their materials while others, like Alyson Shotz, Fred Sandback, and Robert Lazzarini, have underscored the humor and wit inherent in their pieces. Still others, such as H.C. Westermann, combined materials so structurally at odds with each other that the functionality of the object is denied. Many works convey poignant narratives that reflect the artists’ own life experiences. With such variety on display, the common denominator between the objects is their service as points for focus and (re)consideration.

Organized by Elaine D. Gustafson, curator and head of collections and facilities with assistance from curatorial intern Rebekah Maupin.
