Artist
Maria Molteni joins Weatherspoon Curator of Exhibitions Emily Stamey for a virtual chat about shooting hoops and making art—sometimes at the same time.
Maria Molteni is a Nashville-to-Boston-based multimedia artist, educator, and organizer. Having studied painting and printmaking at Boston University, her research-based practice now also incorporates social engagement and transdisciplinary experimentation. She playfully asks audiences to imagine her serving Black Mountain College as its PE coach.
In 2010 Molteni founded New Craft Artists in Action (NCAA), a collective that works on the participatory project
Net Works. The group invites individuals to help them knit and crochet nets for bare hoops found on public basketball courts in overlooked and underused spaces. In addition to
Net Works, Molteni and NCAA make elaborate basketball court murals and create immersive gallery installations of handmade nets, bunting, banners and other elements.
NCAA is one of twenty-one artists featured in the Weatherspoon's crowd-pleasing
To the Hoop: Basketball and Contemporary Art exhibition. While WAM remains closed, we look forward to welcoming visitors very soon.
This virtual event is FREE, registration is required.
